AI investments and development status

Investments: In August, SK Telecom (SKT) announced equity investments in US-based generative AI start-up Anthropic (US$100mn) and domestic AI contact center developer Persona AI. The telco has invested in a number of other AI-related companies since last year, including Konan Technology (roughly W20bn), CMES (W10bn), Scatter Lab (W15bn), and Phantom AI.

Technology partnership: In June, SKT and other major global telcos formed the Global Telco AI Alliance to jointly develop the “Telco AI Platform.”

On-premises LLMs + cloud LLMs = multi-LLM business model

SKT has unveiled a multi-LLM strategy, combining its own on-premises LLMs with Anthropic’s cloud-based LLMs. Along with revenue from its contact center AI and smart factory AI projects, the firm could see increases in: 1) enterprise revenue; 2) IDC/cloud revenue; and 3) telecom revenue (driven by a pickup in wireless/wired data usage over the medium/long term).
